ART AT ES RACÓ D'ARTÀ: Nicholas Woods

"Studded boat painting"

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1971, Woods grew up in New York and later in Madrid, Spain. He has lived for extended periods in both Spain and the U.S. He studied at the Tyler School of Art program in Rome, Italy, and graduated cum laude from Middlebury College, Vermont, in 1993.

Woods' paintings have been exhibited in Europe and the United States: Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art - Mallorca, Pelaires Gallery - Palma de Mallorca, Isa Galerie - Mumbai, Slowtrack - Madrid, Tim Sheward Projects - London, The Royal Standard - Liverpool, CAC Malaga - Malaga, Rena Bransten Gallery - San Francisco, T20 Gallery - Murcia, Maior Gallery - Mallorca and Vacío 9 - Madrid, among others.

Recent projects include the glass façade mural for the Ibiza Gran Hotel in Ibiza, and multiple works for the permanent collection of the Hotel Crillon in Paris. His work is represented in important public collections, especially in Spain, such as the CAC Museum in Malaga; the La Caixa Foundation; the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Mallorca; the Pilar and Joan Miró Foundation, Mallorca; and the Benetton Collection, Milan, among others.

From 1999 to 2004, Woods collaborated with Spanish artist Mónica Fuster on site-specific projects, and his works were shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Europe. In 2004, a selection of his drawings on Plexiglas was included in an exhibition of contemporary drawing at the Museo CAC Málaga, and in 2003 his installation Lair was part of a major exhibition on 25 years of art in Spain at the MUVIM in Valencia. In 2002 they were selected by the curators of the Palais de Tokyo (Paris) Nicolas Bourriaud & Jerôme Sans to receive the Public Art Award of the Altadís Foundation, for their project Helium.
